Astex Technology
Astex is a structure-based drug discovery company pioneering the use of High Throughput X-ray crystallography (HTX®) for the rapid identification of novel drug candidates. HTX® is part of an integrated drug discovery platform that includes cutting-edge technologies covering all aspects of structure-based research, including protein production, crystallization, structure determination, bioinformatics and computational and medicinal chemistry.
The discovery of novel drug leads at Astex is driven by the company's unique structural screening approach that utilizes protein crystal structures to detect the binding of small-molecule fragments.
Many thousands of small-molecule fragments are structurally screened using the company's proprietary X-ray crystallography technologies. This results in a powerful process for rapid structure-based lead generation. Astex is using this approach to identify novel drug leads for proprietary and public domain targets.
Technologies for Drug Discovery
HTX® High Throughput X-ray crystallography
The first step of obtaining the crystal structure of the target protein is achieved using HTX®. HTX® applies automation and innovation to all stages of the gene to structure process.
HTX® allows Astex to solve many hundreds of protein crystal structures of key therapeutic targets in a rapid and efficient way.
AutoSolve®
The crystal structure of a target protein complexed to a lead compound reveals the key binding interactions. This information is then used to guide lead optimisation programs.
The Company's proprietary technology, AutoSolve®, represents a major breakthrough in this field. AutoSolve® is web browser-based software that generates protein/ligand complexes by automated processing of X-ray data at an unprecedented rate. The time taken to generate protein/ligand crystal structures from X-ray data has been reduced from days to minutes.
